Virgil Howe began playing, writing and recording music in his early teens. His father, guitar legend Steve Howe, inspired him to follow in his footsteps, from the piano to the drums, to djing and producing. Taking in early influences like Vangelis and Jimi Hendrix, djing on pirate radio at the birth of Jungle and breaking drum sticks with Little Barrie at the Hammersmith Apollo in 2008.

After releasing a ‘Yes Remix’ album (Rhino/Elektra 2003), Virgil found a home at Scenario Records, under the name Sparo. There he released several 7″ singles, including ‘I Would’ featuring Karime Kendra, who would later join his super-heavy funk band ‘The Killer Meters’.

Along with ‘The Killer Meters, Tribute to the Meters’ album (2004), a critically acclaimed mix cd entitled ‘Sparoworlds’, additional remix duties for The Nextmen and a couple of club, smash-up bootlegs thrown in for good measure, Virgil built a name on the UK underground scene as Sparo, with write-ups in Dazed, IDJ, Wire, Hip Hop Connection and DJ magazines. His last release using the Sparo moniker, ‘The Falling’ (3BARFIRE, 2007), was a lush, down-tempo delight which caught the ear of Judge Jules, who included it on his Radio 1 show and Joe Ransom on Kiss Fm.

Having written and recorded scores for several small independent films, toured the UK creating live sound-scapes on stage using only two turntables for the Box Clever Theatre Company and playing drums for Bryan Ferry, The Pet Shop Boys, Little Barrie, The Dirty Feel, The Killer Meters, Shawn Lee and Future Sound Of London, Virgil Howe is well and truly forging his own path.

Joe and Will met in 2005, both coming from very different musical backgrounds. Joe was releasing drum and bass 12” records while Will came from the hard house and trance scenes. Their name describes their relentless passion to constantly explore genres of music, and represent their different influences within their own characteristic sound that they have become so well known for.

They started collaborating in 2007, and almost immediately drew attention from local DJs at respected nights such as Trash, as well as club promoters and indie labels. Their residencies at underground club nights soon moved into playing at some of the hottest nights in London; Matter, Trailer Trash, Durrr, Club NME, Boombox, Scala, Ministry of Sound, the Egg to name a few, as well as gigs across the UK, Berlin, Florence, Milan, Budapest, Bucharest, Lille, and Ghent..

Meanwhile their productions have been equally well received. Coming across with dirt and cutting edge production and an eye firmly on the dance floor, but also with effortless musicality not normally associated with techno, they win over fans from the band/ indie scene, as easily as diehard clubbers. They inject tonality and musical flow into everything they touch, all under the banner of techno or electro or whatever you would like to call it, and have been compared to SoulWax, Chemical Brothers, DIM and Popof.

The duo signed to Andrew Friendly’s Gulp Communications in 2008, and have released three EPs worth of material, appearing in the Cool Cuts Chart, and bringing a wide fanbase to themselves including Brodinski, Kris Menace, Vicarious Bliss, Casper C, Acid Jacks, AutoKratz, Dark Globe, Jody Wisternoff, Cazals, Matik, Virgin Tears to name a few. They went on to remix a wide array of artists, from the highly blogged Mystery Jets remix, to La Roux on Kitsune/Polydor, Revolver (EMI), The Bell, Jupiters Heroes, Acid Girls, Revolver, Franz & Shape, Division Kent (Sony), Circuit Freq, Milke and Atomizer. There are many other remixes in progress for the likes of Ministry of Sound, and EMI’s new priority band ‘Hockey.

This Berlin based composer operates in a broad creative playground. Beyond Defined Species – the free exposure in experimenting with sound and structure is nearly similar to the path he goes.

Like life is – it was simply a game console when Ecut started producing over ten years ago. Beside of percussion and turntable sets an autarkic working sound was grown. The using of analog and digital sources as well as deeper assimilated vibes are shading colours between black and white.

Just as diverse is the collaboration base he has attracted from all around the world – with names like Film Academy Vienna, Smovement Berlin, Apjiw (Can), Die Linde Berlin, Antonio de Bragga (Can), N-tje (Ger), Imago Meccano (It) and other in his portfolio.

If there is a background then its drawn from life – his music describes stories of different views and tight suggestions – even more a mirror of the phantasmagorium.

London Electronifunk

Barney Spigel – aka Spigelsound / Dubwise / Dr. Spigelfunk – has been producing music and DJing for over ten years. Barney got interested in the concept of music production after first hearing The Prodigy’s The Experience LP and a compilation called 100% Drum & Bass at the age of 13. He started putting ideas together using a cheap Roland GM sound module with Cubase on his PC. He later progressed onto the Macintosh platform using Logic, a hardware sampler and a rack of outboard gear and began compose breakbeat driven music influenced by the likes of The Prodigy, Underworld, DJ Shadow, Roni Size, Goldie and Massive Attack.

At his home studio, Barney has written and produced many tracks in a variety of different styles – including progressive and dubwise drum’n'bass, neo-soul, alternative hip-hop, future funk, dub and film soundtracks – some of which have been licensed for use in a range of TV programmes and one in particular was signed to drum’n'bass legend Marcus Intalex’s Soul:R label, arguably the best in the liquid d’n'b scene. This track – Smash VIP by Amaning & Dubwise – has been played out in clubs all over the planet by some of the world’s top DJs and also featured in the highly acclaimed FabricLive mix CD series on issue 35.

Barney is always working on new material, so expect to see more of his tracks released in the not too distant future. As well as being a music producer, Barney DJs in bars and clubs across London; he runs his own weekly session in Camden called Stir It Up! showcasing new and unsigned talent; he works as a sound & light technician at Soho Theatre and also works in post-production, editing and authoring DVDs.

Aaron Audio is a London-based record producer, prorammer, DJ, and CEO of dogbotpublishing music production company.

“I like music, not genres.”

He DJs as Aaron Audio on the east London gig circuit, mixing live with electro, cheese and dubstep – always accessible but still dirty. He has also clocked more than 50 live gigs as one half of multi-tempo dance outfit Honey Weasel, jamming and mixing live with two laptops, an arsenal of samples and a hoard of mad costumes. The pair, more live performers than studio recorders, have also DJed on the British festival circuit, including Glade festival, the Antic Banquet, and this summer hosted the main stage at the Secret Garden Party.

He is also co-producer of the “A.Theory” ambient music project with Alex Preager, crafting a diverse scope of progressive acoustic electronica .

Whether DJing, producing, or creating original tunes, he works with a broad sound pallet drawn from a lifetime of production experience. Over two decades he has developed a unique personal relationship with production processes and production spaces.

“My dad left me alone in the studio when I was four and I managed to ruin all the drum machine programming they had done that day,” he says. “I was always around recording studios, after school and on family holidays, so it didn’t seem like anything special. But then when I was older I realsied the potential of the equipment and studio’s which was unlimted , .”

Norway/London based Discorockers are a modern three piece that fuses electro, dub, dance and punk rock in an innovative and incredibly exciting way.

Since playing Glastonbury festival 2004 it’s been a rollercoaster ride where they have rocked the London club, gig and party circuit for the past year and have headlined Cargo twice. The band members each bring with them their own unique talents from different musical backgrounds:

Viktoria Winge’s inspiring vocal performance is both angelic and at the same time edgy, and she has often been referred to as ‘a blonde björk’. A true bombshell indeed, she is from a famous Theatrical family and has studied at the Khio Kunsthøgskolen theatre school in Oslo. Victoria is one of those one in a million performers you just can’t look away from! (Hence her many international modeling assignments)

The bands Producer, Anton Jawdokimov, on keyboard and beat mixing duties, uses the latest gadgets and gizmos to get his sound and gets his musical background and experience from the UK rave scene, having worked with the likes of Ninjatune and The Future Sound of London to name a few.

These ingredients create a magic and thrilling combination of sounds and visual energy that has to be seen and enjoyed.

Lush electronic soundscapes and beats from Brighton

Psonikadia has been producing electronica for a number of years. Not one to be pigeonholed, Psonikadia mixes differing styles from pure beat-less enveloping soundscapes to breakbeat, dubstep and everything in between.
Having released on various underground netlabels worldwide, Psonikadia has created quite a buzz, even being tipped for greatness by Radio One’s Rob Da Bank.

After last summers’ signing to Vancouver based label Xynthetic Music, Psonikadia released ‘Minds Without Borders’, a collection of sonic environments from cascading atmospheres and deep ambient backroom breaks, currently Xynthetic’s top selling release.

Inspiration for the pieces comes from the peaceful coastal life in Brighton – the sea, the rolling green hills, the realization of living on an island and the sites and sound of the most special place.

Below is a selection of tracks. More are available on request.

The biggest and baddest dubstepz around

High Rankin has always been a man to set a scene with his music. Fond of cinematic intros, often recording himself for dramatic effect, not afraid to work against the grain.

His tracks are full of character; he aims to make records that stand out from the current crop of formulaic beat and bass rendering.

Based in Brighton, High Rankin started ‘Molten Vinyl Recordings’ in 2004 as a platform to release locally produced Drum’n’Bass. In 2006 he started ‘Suicide Watch’ to push a much harder Drum’n’Bass sound. 2008 saw the birth of ‘Suicide Dub’ as a sister label to Suicide Watch – a digital label for the biggest and baddest dubstepz around.

All labels are going strong and released tracks by artists from around the world.
Publishing for all labels is handled by Mai Plues.
