Master Sitarist

Son of the late Indian composer and Indo-Jazz Fusions founder John Mayer, Jonathan studied sitar from Clem Alford (the first ever European sitar player), Pandit Subroto Roy Chowdhury of Senia Gharana and Ustad Wajahat Khan (direct descendent of Mia Tansen the great musician, one of the nine jewels in Moghul court of Emperor Akbar).

Jonathan studied composition at The Birmingham Conservatoire of Music under Andrew Downes and his father John Mayer. Through his career he has written for a multitude of genres and ensembles including – full symphonic orchestra, brass quintet, choral quartet, jazz ensemble, guitar & violin. His works have been featured on BBC world service and ITV and his compositions on The Teak Project have received rave reviews. Recently Jonathan’s composition can be heard on the CD entitled ‘Mantra’ performed by The Orlando Consort.

Jonathan is one of the most versatile sitarists in the world, having studied both Indian & Western music. From these traditions he has created a unique creativity towards the sitar, seeing it as a instrument and not a genre. His ability to read & compose western notation has enabled him to work on many collaborations and the wide range of artists Jonathan has worked with reflects the diversity in his playing:

Sir Paul McCartney, Future Sound of London, BBC Concert Orchestra, Bombay Dub Orchestra, Sarah Brightman,Joji Hattori, The Bingham String Quartet, Kathryn Tickell, Kumar Bose, Kavita Krishnamutri, Kuljit Bhamra, Erich Gruenburg, Rohan De Saram, Kenny Wheeler, The Orlando Consort, John Wilson, I Musici Fiamminghi Orchestra.

Jonathan has worked in most genres both live and in the studio including rock, pop, British folk, Bulgarian folk, plain chant, renaissance, baroque, western contempory, jazz, jazz fusion, Hindustani classical, funk & dance. One of his main attributes is having an electric sitar which gives more flexibility in the dynamic sound world of popular music. In collaboration with SPNM, Kuljit Bhamra, The BBC Concert Orchestra, Jonathan will be performing original compositions. The brief is to write an orchestral piece while keeping the integrity of ‘Rag’.

Virgil Howe began playing, writing and recording music in his early teens. His father, guitar legend Steve Howe, inspired him to follow in his footsteps, from the piano to the drums, to djing and producing. Taking in early influences like Vangelis and Jimi Hendrix, djing on pirate radio at the birth of Jungle and breaking drum sticks with Little Barrie at the Hammersmith Apollo in 2008.

After releasing a ‘Yes Remix’ album (Rhino/Elektra 2003), Virgil found a home at Scenario Records, under the name Sparo. There he released several 7″ singles, including ‘I Would’ featuring Karime Kendra, who would later join his super-heavy funk band ‘The Killer Meters’.

Along with ‘The Killer Meters, Tribute to the Meters’ album (2004), a critically acclaimed mix cd entitled ‘Sparoworlds’, additional remix duties for The Nextmen and a couple of club, smash-up bootlegs thrown in for good measure, Virgil built a name on the UK underground scene as Sparo, with write-ups in Dazed, IDJ, Wire, Hip Hop Connection and DJ magazines. His last release using the Sparo moniker, ‘The Falling’ (3BARFIRE, 2007), was a lush, down-tempo delight which caught the ear of Judge Jules, who included it on his Radio 1 show and Joe Ransom on Kiss Fm.

Having written and recorded scores for several small independent films, toured the UK creating live sound-scapes on stage using only two turntables for the Box Clever Theatre Company and playing drums for Bryan Ferry, The Pet Shop Boys, Little Barrie, The Dirty Feel, The Killer Meters, Shawn Lee and Future Sound Of London, Virgil Howe is well and truly forging his own path.

Joe and Will met in 2005, both coming from very different musical backgrounds. Joe was releasing drum and bass 12” records while Will came from the hard house and trance scenes. Their name describes their relentless passion to constantly explore genres of music, and represent their different influences within their own characteristic sound that they have become so well known for.

They started collaborating in 2007, and almost immediately drew attention from local DJs at respected nights such as Trash, as well as club promoters and indie labels. Their residencies at underground club nights soon moved into playing at some of the hottest nights in London; Matter, Trailer Trash, Durrr, Club NME, Boombox, Scala, Ministry of Sound, the Egg to name a few, as well as gigs across the UK, Berlin, Florence, Milan, Budapest, Bucharest, Lille, and Ghent..

Meanwhile their productions have been equally well received. Coming across with dirt and cutting edge production and an eye firmly on the dance floor, but also with effortless musicality not normally associated with techno, they win over fans from the band/ indie scene, as easily as diehard clubbers. They inject tonality and musical flow into everything they touch, all under the banner of techno or electro or whatever you would like to call it, and have been compared to SoulWax, Chemical Brothers, DIM and Popof.

The duo signed to Andrew Friendly’s Gulp Communications in 2008, and have released three EPs worth of material, appearing in the Cool Cuts Chart, and bringing a wide fanbase to themselves including Brodinski, Kris Menace, Vicarious Bliss, Casper C, Acid Jacks, AutoKratz, Dark Globe, Jody Wisternoff, Cazals, Matik, Virgin Tears to name a few. They went on to remix a wide array of artists, from the highly blogged Mystery Jets remix, to La Roux on Kitsune/Polydor, Revolver (EMI), The Bell, Jupiters Heroes, Acid Girls, Revolver, Franz & Shape, Division Kent (Sony), Circuit Freq, Milke and Atomizer. There are many other remixes in progress for the likes of Ministry of Sound, and EMI’s new priority band ‘Hockey.

This Berlin based composer operates in a broad creative playground. Beyond Defined Species – the free exposure in experimenting with sound and structure is nearly similar to the path he goes.

Like life is – it was simply a game console when Ecut started producing over ten years ago. Beside of percussion and turntable sets an autarkic working sound was grown. The using of analog and digital sources as well as deeper assimilated vibes are shading colours between black and white.

Just as diverse is the collaboration base he has attracted from all around the world – with names like Film Academy Vienna, Smovement Berlin, Apjiw (Can), Die Linde Berlin, Antonio de Bragga (Can), N-tje (Ger), Imago Meccano (It) and other in his portfolio.

If there is a background then its drawn from life – his music describes stories of different views and tight suggestions – even more a mirror of the phantasmagorium.

Sharps began making music as a child by experimenting with cheap keyboards, casette tape and broken machines. Today his music has evolved into a hitech bass music for size large sound systems. His productions are driven by the need for massive tracks that rock dance floors and push the boundaries of genre and style.

Having cut his teeth early on listening to the adventurous music of Aphex Twin and Autechre, Sharps learned the value of doing things differently, yet recognizes the excitement and energy that comes when people gather together to wash their souls in bass. Sharps draws his influences from many facets, but counts the glitch sound, dubstep, miami bass, breakbeat and random dance music among his top sources of inspiration.

Although he is at the beginning of his journey through dance music, his productions have already caught the attention from top artists and DJs from both sides of the pond including Si Begg, Mat the Alien and Bassnectar. Other accolades include a national Canadian award for composition in 2002, and top reviews for his tracks on www.nuskoolbreaks.co.uk.

Sharps comes from Western Canada, a land of legendary sound systems and forest parties, and has been involved with the undergound music culture in the area since 1995. Co-owner and manager of Saedos Records, Sharps continues to develop the label, bringing outstanding tracks to the world.

CSY is a London based dance music producer, combining Electro, Techno and House music in an infectious manor.Being housed by hip hop as a youngster, CSY became actively involved in the UK hip hop scene and enjoyed many an Ill Commotion DJing to the Hip Hop hungry crowds. Djing was an important step in shaping the sound CSY now produces, learning what made the dance floor move whilst trying to avoid the obvious club tunes helped train his ear to the sounds he liked which ultimately moved him away from hip hop and into dance music. So even though CSY now has a serious case of the “Techno Bug”, you hear his Hip Hop influences which differentiate his sound from the rest.

London Electronifunk

Barney Spigel – aka Spigelsound / Dubwise / Dr. Spigelfunk – has been producing music and DJing for over ten years. Barney got interested in the concept of music production after first hearing The Prodigy’s The Experience LP and a compilation called 100% Drum & Bass at the age of 13. He started putting ideas together using a cheap Roland GM sound module with Cubase on his PC. He later progressed onto the Macintosh platform using Logic, a hardware sampler and a rack of outboard gear and began compose breakbeat driven music influenced by the likes of The Prodigy, Underworld, DJ Shadow, Roni Size, Goldie and Massive Attack.

At his home studio, Barney has written and produced many tracks in a variety of different styles – including progressive and dubwise drum’n'bass, neo-soul, alternative hip-hop, future funk, dub and film soundtracks – some of which have been licensed for use in a range of TV programmes and one in particular was signed to drum’n'bass legend Marcus Intalex’s Soul:R label, arguably the best in the liquid d’n'b scene. This track – Smash VIP by Amaning & Dubwise – has been played out in clubs all over the planet by some of the world’s top DJs and also featured in the highly acclaimed FabricLive mix CD series on issue 35.

Barney is always working on new material, so expect to see more of his tracks released in the not too distant future. As well as being a music producer, Barney DJs in bars and clubs across London; he runs his own weekly session in Camden called Stir It Up! showcasing new and unsigned talent; he works as a sound & light technician at Soho Theatre and also works in post-production, editing and authoring DVDs.

Martello is a 26 year old Estonian writer and music producer with 8 years experience. He is an electrical engineer by trade, music producing and music itself is his hobby and love.

He began by messing with tracker type programs like ModPlug tracker and similar. 2 years ago he discovered sequencer type programs and currently uses Cubase 4. His music is 100 % software and samples. He loves playing with soft-synths’ different features and feels like crazy scientist in another era!

He sums up his style with 3 simple words – electronic dance music. He most loves deep house, dubstep, old school jungle and also modern dance/club music sounds. All these styles influence his music. When he was 6 years old he found his father’s old broken tape-recorder, got it fixed, and found some old tapes by Whitney Houston. This was Martello gone – the music captured him.

Martello says signing with Mai Plues is his first official milestone. His music has also been broadcast several times on Estonian radio station Radio 2.

Ear Friendly DrumnBass and Breakbeat

Heavily influenced by the London pirate radio scene circa 1995 and his early experience as a sound engineer for jazz concerts and musicals at schools, Eon began dabbling with Drumnbass, Breakbeat and Hiphop, producing on a 486 PC, using Cakewalk , his fathers Akai S2000 sampler and Yamaha TX81Z as the primary sound sources.

As the years passed his skills and equipment grew, and he began DJing at house parties, squat parties & club nights. An ecnouraging moment came in 2004 when he played a set exclusively of music he had written. The overwhelming response gave him the gumption to continue writing and producing in search of the elusive record deal.

Now with ten years experience in the music industry, highlights include plays on XFM, syncs on documentary films and VJ films he was commissioned to create. Eon has a prolific back catalogue of friendly drumnbass & breakbeat
